How come my sets don’t look like Karl’s?

DramaShare is blessed to have a great resource, Karl Wagner, who has helped thousands of folks all over the world design and improve their sets. Here’s where you can post a question, or an answer.

I hope your sets are better! My ideas are to just get you thinking, and then you’ll take it to the next level. But if you want to do some reading, try Scenic Art and Construction
    A Practical Guide
    Emma Troubridge and Tim Blaikie
And there are many, many others.

Backdrops, drops, scenic art, it’s nearly all learnable. Along the ideas of getting thinking, here is another backdrop we painted in a parking lot. In some ways I am showing off, but what I feel that I am showing off is that you can do something like this yourself. The theme for summer camp was an Indiana Jones type of thing. This drop was 17′ x 38′, was painted with WalMart house paint, and was painted almost exclusively with paint rollers. Some 9″, some 4.5″, and some of the very small 2-3″ ones. I did do all of the foliage, with rollers, and sitting in a wheelchair using roller handle extensions. However, most of the work was, again, done by folks who had no experience, but were willing to follow instructions. Those instructions could come from an experienced person at your church, or, believe it or not, from me, through DramaShare. I have helped a few churches with set design and some others with making backdrops. I am willing to offer some consultation to our members, and it doesn’t cost anything to ask. http://www.dramashare.org//images//aztectemple.jpg

Where can the backdrop material be purchased?
