“Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:14

San Francisco—December, 1939
America’s favorite radio theater family, the Patterson’s is finishing up another episode of The Continental Electric Radio Theater. Immediately after the show Fred announces that he and Peggy (the parents) are flying to Hawaii via a China Clipper for their wedding anniversary. The children, Daniel and Gloria, will be doing next week’s Christmas special without them. But when their China Clipper fails to arrive at Hawaii, the children go into the Christmas show not knowing if their parents are still alive.
The radio theater Christmas story closely mirrors what is actually taking place in the children’s lives at the time. When the show ends Daniel and Gloria are crying. But are they crying about their parents or about the show?
This “story within a story,” half stage play and half radio theater drama gives the audience an authentic view of 1930s radio theater and a nostalgic glimpse into the America of three generations past.
