The Temple

Eli, Hophni and Phinehas are arranging gifts at the altar. When they are about finished, Eli turns to the others with troubled look on his face.

Eli: Now my sons, please finish this while I go to study. By the way, I’ve heard some terrible rumors about you two. I hope that you are really not doing all of those things.

Hophni and Phinehas:(in unison) They’re all completely untrue. Lies.

Eli: I hope so. God certainly would not like the things that I’ve heard about you.

Hophni: Father, now that we’re finished here, we must go and direct the servants to prepare for tomorrow’s services.

Hophni and Phinehas exit, S/R. Hannah enters S/L, leading Samuel by the hand. Hannah approaches Eli hesitantly.

Hannah: Sir, do you remember me? I am the woman who prayed the Lord send her a child. Now I have come to dedicate him to the Lord’s service for all of his life, just as I promised.

Eli: Yes. I do remember. May the Lord bless you with more children for the son you have given Him. Let’s pray together.

All kneel at the altar in prayer, then exit S/L.

Hophni and Phinehas enter S/R with a burlap sack. They approach the altar and start to take food items from it, placing them into the sack. Then Phinehas takes a coin from the offering plate. Hophni takes a $5.00 bill and stuffs it into his pocket. Phinehas then empties the entire offering plate into the sack. At that point, Eli enters S/L, and catches them. He has a look of great anger on his face. Samuel sits front stage, studying a scroll.

Eli: What are you doing?!?!?!?!?

Hophni and Phinehas: (in unison) Nothing.

Eli: How can you sin like this against the Lord? Stop it my sons! This is the awful thing that I have been hearing about you. If a man sins against another man, God can defend him; but who can defend a man who sins against the Lord?

Hophni: Aw, Dad. Nobody but you saw us do it. How is anyone else ever gonna know?

Phinehas: Yeah, Dad. Don’t get so excited. Chill out.

Eli turns and exits S/R, slowly.

Eli: What am I ever going to do with these two?

Hophni and Phinehas exit, S/L.

Hophni: Come on, Phinehas, let’s go check out what kind of good food came in for sacrifices.

Eli: Samuel, get your bedroll. Its time to go to retire. You should sleep here by the altar tonight to keep watch in case those two come back.

Samuel: Yes, Eli.

Samuel rolls out his bedroll next to the altar. Eli’s bed is on stage, below the pulpit by the altar rail. Samuel lies down on the bedroll. Eli lights a candle and then turns to go to his bed.
