Bartimaeus, A Blind Man Sees Jesus

  • Cast Number: 1
  • Run-time: 8 minutes
  • Bible Reference: Matthew 20:29-34
when eyes are opened. A monologue with recorded voices of Jacob, Simeon's grandson, Joanna (who witnessed the raising of Lazarus). These people had stopped on several occasions to talk with Bartimaeus. When the Messiah came, he (B) had the scripture knowledge to know and believe in the miracles Jesus had performed.

Sample of script:

Note: the supporting parts can either be read live from back stage or recorded ahead of time, as they are only heard over the sound system, and not seen. We recorded them as wav files, and inserted them into the Powerpoint presentation we use to project our service. It’s not nearly as hard or complicated as it sounds….especially if you have some teenagers to help you!

We hear these words from scripture read aloud - “he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole.”

Bartimaeus:It’s true you know, all true. You are looking at a blind man who can see. I was born blind, and for most of my life, I sat by the side of the road and listened as the world passed me by. Most people ignored me, as if I wasn’t there. Some stopped to offer pity, they meant well but sometimes I felt worse after they stopped to chat, although I gladly accepted their alms. But then there were those who treated my like….a person. They connected me with the real world.

Jacob would always stop and talk on his way to and from Jerusalem. Jacob had his own troubles, he was poor and had a big family to care for…but he always had a word for me…… (as Jacob is heard over the sound system, Bartimaeus lowers his head and then raises it again, eyes closed as he is transformed back to the blind man who Jacob was speaking to)

Jacob: Hello Bartimaeus, how are you. Remember Bartimaeus “he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. He took our infirmities and bore our diseases”

Bartimaeus: The Messiah?

Jacob: Yes Bartimaeus, he’s coming you know….I don’t know when and I wish he’d hurry, but I know he’s coming and I know he’s coming to save us….to save you….and me too!

Bartimaeus: (open eyes slowly to come back to the present) Jacob knew his scriptures, and over the years he had taught them to me. They gave me hope. Another friend was young Simeon….., Simeon would always tell me the same story…. (once again, as Simeon is heard over the sound system, Bartimaeus lowers his head and then raises it again, eyes closed as he is transformed back to the blind man who Jacob was speaking to)
