SCENE I

PAUL ( stands, looks toward choir): Gloria in excelsis Deo! Glory to God in the heavenly heights!

PAUL: (sits, begins to write, then looks up): I, Paul, am an apostle on special assignment for Christ, our living hope. “My aim is to raise hopes by pointing the way to life without end. This is the life God promised long ago—and He doesn’t break promises! …[W]hen the time was [right], He went public with His truth. I’ve been entrusted to proclaim this Message by order of our Savior, God Himself.” “Going through a long line of prophets, God has been addressing our ancestors in different ways for centuries.” Isaiah was one of those prophets, and if he were here today, we could hear the voice of God in Isaiah’s words…

(Isaiah enters and mounts higher right box)

ISAIAH: A prophet, a mouthpiece for the word of the Lord—that’s what I have been for many years. In the year that King Uzziah died I had an experience that changed my life—I had a vision of Almighty God!
(raising hands) He was surrounded with seraphs who called out their praise of His glory and holiness. The temple throbbed with the sound of their voices and I cried out in fear, for the realization of the holiness of God made me aware of my sinfulness. (pause and bow head, then raise again.)As I stood in contrition, one of the seraphs flew to me to acknowledge that my confession had been heard and my guilt had been burned away. Then the voice of the Lord called me to be His messenger…and I answered, “Here am I, send me!”
Afterwards, I received message after message from God—many were stern words of retribution for His people, as He sought to call them to repentance, but others were magnificent words of encouragement, such as: (gesture with hands)
“Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low: the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken!”
There were other times when the prophecies the Lord gave me were enigmas. One such was of a time to come when the transcendent, immortal God Himself would become Immanuel, God with us. From that time onward God’s people watched, waited and prayed for the coming of the promised One.

(Isaiah exits)

(ANTHEM OR CAROL: EMMANUEL, GOD WITH US, arr. Fettke, or similar arrangement of O COME, O COME EMMANUEL and/or EMMANUEL)

SCENE II

PAUL (standing): “All of our praise rises to the One who is strong enough to make you strong, exactly as preached in Jesus Christ, precisely as revealed in the mystery kept secret for so long but now an open book through the prophetic Scriptures.” Then “…when the time arrived that was set by God the Father, He sent His Son, born among us of a woman, born under the conditions of the law so that He might redeem …us.” You remember that Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would conceive and a child would be born—a Son would be given and that the government would be on His shoulders. That He would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace? Mary, a young woman living in Nazareth, was chosen to give birth to the Son of God and the angel Gabriel was given the privilege of announcing this wonderful news to Mary…

(Mary enters, goes to right lower box, kneels quietly, in an attitude of prayer.)

PAUL (looking at Mary): I wonder if Isaiah’s words were in Mary’s mind as she prayed…

(Gabriel enters and goes to upper right box; Paul sits)

GABRIEL: “Good morning! You’re beautiful with God’s beauty, beautiful inside and out! God be with you.”

(Mary turns toward Gabriel, and reacts with fright, “thoroughly shaken”)

GABRIEL: “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call His name Jesus. He will be great, be called ‘Son of the Highest.’ The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; He will rule Jacob’s house forever—no end, ever, to His kingdom.”

MARY: “But how? I’ve never slept with a man.”
