Companys Coming

$12.00 (USD)

Illustrating the “waiting” and “preparing” of the Advent season. The excitement as a family prepares for the return of an old friend, and how they want everything to be just right for the homecoming.
Uses 3 actors, (representing a father, mother and teen child), plus 2 off-stage narrators. Narration could be eliminated, (resulting in a 2 minute drama), or could be only one narrator.
Cast consist of a Father, Mother and (likely) teen child, plus 2 offstage narrators, (could be combined).
Script:
mother is on stage busily cleaning, father enters
Father: Dear, I’m home, where are you?
Mother: In here, in the living room, tidying up.
Father: Tidying up? Today? But it’s Monday, you don’t usually do the housework until Thursday.
Mother: Yes, but this week is special. Rebecca is coming to visit!
Father: Rebecca? Your old friend from college?
Mother: Isn’t it exciting? And her husband is coming too!
Father: Mark? Coming here? Wow, it’s been, . . . years since Mark and I got together! You know, I just should get my golf clubs out, polish them up, take old Mark out on the golf course, just like old times!
Wendy comes in: What’s that I heard, Rebecca, Mark; you mean Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are coming? Here? And I suppose that means, (blushes), I suppose Freddie will be coming as well!
Mother: Yes, Rebecca said that Fred, they call him Fred now, not Freddie, anyhow, yes, Freddie is coming too!
Wendy: Oh, I can’t believe it! Seeing Freddie, I mean, Fred, again! He’s so, so, cute! I have to go and shower, do my hair. Mom, did you see my new orange blouse and my black stirrups? Oh, I can hardly wait!
Actors freeze, or lights off
Narrator #1: When we know someone is coming for a visit, our homes become a flurry of activity. Floors are swept, shelves dusted, windows are washed; everything is cleaned up to make our homes ready for our friends.
But is there some part of us that we have forgotten to take care of? Is our home and our personal appearance all that there is to getting ready? When Jesus appeared at the gates of Jerusalem, the people hailed him as king, and prepared the way, the way that led to His crucifixion.

Narrator #2: They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
