The "Jack-in-the- clock" shows how you have a choice to be in control of your own feelings, whether it be to be angry, resentful . . . or even happy!

Cast:  2 any gender

 

Set:   none

 

Costumes: “Pat” wears street clothes.  “Jack–in-the-box”  wears bright clothing; we use a yellow smiley-face T-shirt. Can use clown make-up for face, gloves, etc., as desired.

 

Props:  A chair for Jack-in-box.  If desired, use a big cardboard box with a clock face painted on it, and sit the chair with Jack in the box. Pat needs a sheet of paper for instructions.

 

Time:   3-4 min.

 

Script:

 

Setting:  Jack-in-box is on stage, either hidden in the box, or if in chair, slumped over and still, head down. Pat enters with instruction sheet.

 

Pat:           “Okay, I’m not going to be late any more.  This new alarm clock is supposed to be the best there is.  It is guaranteed to wake you up and wake you up happy! It’s called “Jack-in-the-clock!”  What fun!  I’ll just adjust it  here…”

 

Pat fiddles with back of Jack. Jack pops up, big smile, waving hands, and continues gaily until pushed back down.

 

Jack:          “Have a nice day!  Have a nice day, Have a nice day!  Have a nice day!  Have a nice-”

 

(Jack is pushed down and resumes slumped position)

 

Pat:           “Oh wow! That is so cool!  This is gong to be great.  Let me read here about how you set it.”

 

Jack: (Pops up) “Have a nice day!  Have a nice day, Have a nice day!  Have a nice day!  Have a nice-”

 

 

Pat: (pushes down) “Hold on here, let me figure out how to set you –”

 

Jack: (Pops up) “Have a nice day!  Have a nice day, Have a nice day!  Have a nice day!  Have a nice-”

 

Pat: (pushes down) “Alright already!  Take a break will you?  You make me wonder if this will be a nice day. (waits and Jack stays silent).  That’s better. In fact, this has the makings of a crummy day.  I have to go to the dentist, and there is that meeting with my boss. That probably is not going to be a good thing. The car is making a funny noise and —

 

Jack: (Pops up) “Have a nice day!  Have a nice day, Have a nice day!  Have a nice day!  Have a nice-”

 

Pat: (pushes down) “Good grief!”

 

Jack: (Pops up) “Have a nice day!  Have a nice day, Have a nice day!  Have a nice day!  Have a nice-”
