Description
called out of the darkness mime
Cast:
8 people plus a male voice over.
Costume:
– God – dressed in all white, (white long sleeved shirt, white pants, and a white sash tied around his forehead. He should wear a long, white overcoat with pockets, containing six white sashes.) He would always have a calm smile on his face, unless otherwise noted.
– Devil – dressed all in black, (black long sleeved shirt, black pants, and a black sash tied around his forehead). He would always have a smirk on his face.
-6 members of the “group” – all dressed in black long sleeved shirts and black pants. They also have black sashes, but they have them tied around their heads, pulled over their eyes so they cannot see. For safety matters, have them always with their heads downward so they can have their sashes slightly up enabling them to see the edge of the stage.
Sample of script:
While stage remains in complete darkness, a male voice over calmly and smoothly reads the following scripture:
Voice over
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.
Immediately after the voice over is finished, lights come up on the stage to reveal the group. The group of six are standing completely still side-by-side in a row, facing the audience. They have their sashes over their eyes.
The devil enters from stage left.
As group remains perfectly still, the devil walks around and eyes up the members of the group. He smiles cruelly at the audience and snickers to himself.
Rubbing his hands together in excitement, the devil walks in front of the group. He turns his back to the audience as he faces the group and raises his arms straight up.
Group remains completely still until the devil brings his hands together above his head and claps once. Immediately upon that clap, the group simultaneously goes down to their knees.
Note that all of the mime’s movements should be simultaneous and quick.
The devil turns to the audience and smiles coyly. He turns back to the group and raises his arms above his head again.
This time, as the devil claps once, the group remains on their knees, turn to their right. They place their right arm on the back of the person to their right and raise their left arm above their head with their hand in a fist. They would freeze at this point, giving the impression that they are about to drive a dagger into someone else’s back. Again, the devil turns to the audience, looking very satisfied with himself, and rubs his hands together again.
The devil raises his arms above his head. Before he claps, God enters from stage left. He should have a look of concern on his face. Going unnoticed, God would clutch his heart as he looks in anger as what is going on. When the devil claps once, the group would follow through their movement with the imaginary dagger, and drive it into the back of the person to their right. Simultaneously, they would stand and bow their heads to the devil. At the exact time the group drives the daggers in, God would grab his shoulder with both hands, as if feeling the pain of those hurt.
When the group is standing and facing the devil, the devil would begin to walk around, impressed with his troops. As he approaches the left side of the stage, he sees God, who is looking at the devil with absolutely no expression. The devil obviously gets nervous, but then remembers about his troops. He points to the group and then points to himself as if indicating his ownership over them. God simply shakes his head at the devil and points to the group and then to himself.
Sarcastically, the devil claps his hands once in defiance of God and the group simultaneously kneel.
