Litany for Good Friday

Litany for Good Friday

$16.00 (USD)

Good Friday Litany complete with well-researched background.  Starting with the hymn, “Were You There?”, this drama consists of readings from Scripture and congregation replies.  Would make a nice seniors’ ministry also.

Sample of script:

CONGREGATION: The Lord says, “My servant will succeed in his task;he will be highly honored. Isaiah 52: 13

READER 1: Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches in the field and spread them on the road. The people who were in front and those who followed behind began to shout, “Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the coming kingdom of King David, our father! Praise be to God!” Mark 11: 8-10
CONGREGATION: Many people were shocked when they saw him; he was so disfigured that he hardly looked human. Isaiah 52: 14
READER 2: Then Pilate’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s palace, and the whole company gathered around him. They stripped off his clothes and put a scarlet robe on him. Then they made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand; then they knelt before him and made fun of him. “Long live the King of the Jews!” they said. They spat on him, and took the stick and hit him over the head. When they had finished making fun of him, they took the robe off and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. Matthew 27: 27-31
CONGREGATION: But now many nations will marvel at him, and kings will be speechless with amazement. They will see and understand something they had never known. Isaiah 52: 15
READER 3: Even though he had performed all these miracles in their presence, they did not believe in him, so that what the prophet Isaiah had said might come true:
“Lord, who believed the message we told? To whom did the Lord reveal his power?”
And so they were not able to believe, because Isaiah also said, “God has blinded their eyes and closed their minds, so that their eyes would not see, and their minds would not understand, and they would not turn to me, says God, for me to heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him. John 12: 37-41
CONGREGATION: The people reply, “Who would have believed what we now report? Who could have seen the Lord’s hand in this? Isaiah 53: 1
READER 4: Jesus took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, “Listen! We are going to Jerusalem where everything the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true. He will be handed over to the Gentiles, who will make fun of him, insult him, and spit on him. They will whip him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life.”
But the disciples did not understand any of these things; the meaning of the words was hidden from them, and they did not know what Jesus was talking about. Luke 18: 31-34
CONGREGATION: It was the will of the Lord that his servant grow like a plant taking root in dry ground. He had no dignity or beauty to make us take notice of him. There was nothing attractive about him, nothing that would draw us to him. Isaiah 53:2
READER 5: Because of our sins he was given over to die, and he was raised to life in order to put us right with God. Romans 4:28
CONGREGATION: We despised him and rejected him; he endured suffering and pain. No one would even look at him – we ignored him as if he were nothing. Isaiah 53:3
READER 1: The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him. He came to his own country, but his own people did not receive him. John 1: 10-11
READER 2: But even though he was God’s Son, he learned through his sufferings to be obedient. When he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. Hebrews 5:8
READER 3: and [Jesus] said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me.” He went a little farther on, threw himself face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.”
Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” Matthew 26: 38-39, 42
CONGREGATION: But he endured the suffering that should have been ours, the pain that we should have borne. All the while we thought that his suffering was punishment sent by God. But because of our sins he was wounded, beaten because of the evil we did. We are healed by the punishment he suffered, made whole by the blows he received. Isaiah 53:4-5
READER 4: So then, as the one sin condemned all mankind, in the same way the one righteous act sets all mankind free and gives them life. And just as all people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way they will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man. Romans 5: 18-19
READER 5: God offered him, so that by his sacrificial death he should become the means by which people’s sins are forgiven through their faith in him. God did this in order to demonstrate that he is righteous. In the past he was patient and overlooked people’s sins; but in the present time he deals with their sins, in order to demonstrate his righteousness. In this way God shows that he himself is righteous and that he puts right everyone who believes in Jesus. Romans 3: 25-26
