four readers

Reader1:     Back in Old Testament times life was hard for the Jewish people. Captives in their own land, virtual slaves to the whims of their despised Roman conquerors.

Reader2:     Devout Jews held on to the promise that a Messiah, a Saviour, would be sent by God, to lead them to victory, to find release from their cruel Roman masters.

Reader3:     A leader with courage and strength.

Reader4:     One who will bring a return to power and glory for the nation of Israel, who will cause oppression to cease forever.

Reader1:     A leader patterned after Moses, Elijah, Abraham, King David.

Reader2:     Through hundreds of years of waiting many had given up hope.

Reader3:     But some believed that what God had promised, God would, in his time, deliver.

Reader4:     Some held firm to the words of the prophets:

Reader1:     You Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.

Reader2:     He will be great and will be called the son of the most high. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.

Reader3:     The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.

Reader4:     Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he will come and redeem his people.

Reader1:     Waiting in anticipation.

Reader2:     Expecting.

Reader3:     Hoping.

Reader4:     Come, Messiah.  Come.

Song:        Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

SCENE II – MARY & JOSEPH

7 readers  NOTE: ANGEL (male) needs to be an efficient reader as this is a larger part, READER1 is female and JOSEPH needs to be expressive

Reader1:     The birth of Jesus happened in this manner:

Reader2:     There was a young girl, a child really, living in Nazareth, a town in Galilee.

Reader3:     The girl’s name was Mary.

Reader4:     Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, the carpenter.

Reader5:     One day an angel, Gabriel, visited Mary. . . The angel brought strange news.

Angel:       Good morning Mary! God is very pleased with the kind of person you are, both inside and out. And so God has a job for you to do.

Reader1:     Imagine how bizarre, and rather terrifying, this message would be to a young girl.

Reader2:     But Gabriel was kind and gentle, and he comforted Mary.

Angel:       Mary you have nothing to fear. God has worked out all the details. You will become pregnant with God’s own son, and you will call him Jesus.

Reader3:     This news surely must have rocked Mary’s world!

Reader4:     The angel soothed Mary’s nerves, God had everything under his control.

Angel:       The child that you give birth to is the Messiah. He is the leader that your people have prayed for.  .  . And just think Mary, you have the great honour of being mother to the Messiah.

Reader5:     Now, although Mary was still concerned, she felt a calm come over her.

Reader1:     Me, Mary, being the mother of the Messiah, God’s own son! . . .

Reader2:     Just think if this happened to you . . how would you react to this kind of news?

Reader3:     Wow, that would be some kind of news,  . . . hard to imagine really!

Reader1:     If that happened to me I would be really scared. But proud, kinda . . . that God had chosen me.

Reader2:     Proud maybe,  . . . but really worried about what was going to happen. . . . And worried about what others would say.

Reader3:     Imagine what Mary’s friends would think!

Reader4:     Friends are one thing . . .  what about Mary’s family?

Reader5:     Mary’s mom would be afraid for Mary.

Reader2:     And Mary’s dad would be . . . wow . . . upset!

Reader1:     Some of the neighbours just wouldn’t understand.

Reader3:     Hey wait a minute! . . . What is Joseph going to say about all this?

Reader4:     You are right, Mary is engaged to marry Joseph!

Reader5:     He would be worried I think. . . . .  Maybe angry.

Reader1:     Yes, angry for sure . . . and hurt.

Reader2:     And Joseph did find out that Mary was going to have a baby. . . And he was hurt . . and angry.
