Three Brothers of Flanders Series

Three Brothers of Flanders Series

$25.00 (USD)

Day Day Collection

6 actors (four male, two female)
5 episodes, 4 to 10 minutes each

“But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things….And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to babes in Christ….For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?” 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:3 (abridged)

This delightful story, done in five segments, is told in fairy tale fashion, combining elements of “The Three Little Pigs” and the “Red Riding Hood” stories to symbolize the natural, the carnal, and the spiritual man. Jevin builds his house quickly without a firm foundation. Kevin builds a good foundation, but skimps on the walls. Devin builds his house the long, hard way. All vie for the affection of the Red Riding Hood.
Alas! The mean, hungry lion is on the prowl, looking for a meal. Will he succeed? Who will win the heart of our fair young maiden?
Good ham acting. Each episode ends in some kind of peril, with those who see it having to come back the next day to see what happens next. In addition to teaching good biblical truth, this drama is just plain fun.
Three Brothers of Flanders is part of a larger work entitled “The Fork around the Bend,” a drama anthology for week long Christian camps, conferences, church day camps, or after school programs. The Fork Around the Bend Collection is also available through DramaShare.

Day One

Setting:
Mary is working in her kitchen.

Story teller: Once upon a time in the faraway land of Flanders there was a poor widow named Mary Kasmeranov. She was so poor she couldn’t even afford ice cream. Mary had three sons. There was Jevin, her oldest.

Jevin: I’m going to be a rich and famous movie star.

(JEVIN strolls about the stage, combing his hair, putting on sunglasses and signing autographs for adoring female fans.)

Story teller: The trouble was he was so busy admiring himself that he wouldn’t help his mother with the dishes.

Mary: Jevin, would you please help me with the dishes?

Jevin: Sorry mom. The hot water steams up my sunglasses.

(JEVIN resumes signing autographs and leaves MARY to do the dishes by herself.)

Story teller: Her second oldest was Kevin.

Kevin: I’m going to win an Olympic gold medal for Belgium. Actually, it’s for myself, but it sounds better if I tell everybody it’s for Belgium.

(KEVIN does calisthenics and push-ups.)

Story teller: Kevin was so busy training that he wouldn’t help his mother either.

Mary: Kevin, would you please till the vegetable garden?

(MARY tries to hand him a hoe.)

Kevin: Sorry mom. The hoe gives me hoe-hands.

(KEVIN does more calisthenics.)

Story teller: Her youngest son Devin was much more helpful.

Mary: Devin, would you please help me with the dishes?

Devin: I’d be delighted, mother. And then I’ll till the vegetable garden.

(DEVIN helps with the dishes.)

Story teller: Every morning Mary read to her sons from the book of wisdom.

(JEVIN is sleeping. KEVIN is frozen in a muscle flexing pose.)

Mary: Be on the alert! Your enemy, the mean hungry lion is lurking about, looking for someone to devour.

Story teller: Jevin, the oldest, didn’t pay any attention. Kevin, the middle son, didn’t care much about the book of wisdom either. But Devin, the youngest, couldn’t get enough of the book.

(DEVIN listens attentively and takes notes.)

Later that morning the boys were out by the vegetable garden.
(MARY exits. The boys change positions for later that morning. JEVIN is asleep again. KEVIN is doing his calisthenics. Devin is working hard in the garden.)
Just then a beautiful fair young maiden named Red Riding Hood happened by.

Red: Good morning, boys.

(DEVIN tips his hat to her and continues working. KEVIN goes bonkers over her. He immediately begins showing off his muscles. He picks up a paper wad and shot-putts it a great distance. The sound awakens JEVIN. KEVIN drops to one knee before RED RIDING HOOD.)

Kevin: Oh Red Riding Hood. You are so beautiful! Will you marry me?

(JEVIN shoves KEVIN aside.)

Jevin: You don’t want to marry him. You should marry me. I’m going to be a big movie star. Would you like my autograph?

(KEVIN shoves JEVIN aside.)

Kevin: You’d much rather have my autograph.

Red (sweetly): Sorry boys. I don’t have time to stay this morning. I’m heading to my grandmother’s house in the woods.

Devin: Watch out for the mean hungry lion.

Jevin: Ha, ha, ha. You actually believe that stuff mom reads about in her book?

(JEVIN turns to RED RIDING HOOD.)

There is no mean hungry lion. There’s just adorable me.

Kevin: Actually, there is a mean hungry lion. But if you let me escort you to grandmother’s house, I’ll protect you.

Red: That’s very nice of you boys. Maybe some other time. Bye.

Story teller: And with that Red Riding Hood was off into the woods. Now that hurt, because if there’s anything young men can’t stand, it’s female rejection.

(JEVIN and KEVIN go through tantrums. DEVIN just keeps right on working.)

Will Red Riding Hood meet the mean hungry lion in the woods? What will become of Mary’s three sons? Come back tomorrow for the next exciting episode of Three Brothers of Flanders.
