Description

Theme:       Scene 3 from an 8 scene readers drama, (Stages Of Messiah), about different times in the life of Jesus and his ministry, this portion tells of Jesus staying behind at the temple when his parents left for home.
Individual scenes can be ordered and staged as self-standing dramas, (click on the individual item), are: birth, dedication at the temple, temptation of Jesus, miracles of Jesus, Upper Room/Gethsemane, crucifixion and resurrection.

Cast:         3, narrator and 2 readers, male or female

Set:          blank with 3 chairs

 

Sound, Costumes: standard

 

Lighting:      Spotlights for narrator and readers and also for Tableau. Experiment with spot colours and locations to somewhat isolate the individual readers and the tableau but to leave the overall stage rather dark. Individual reading lights for readers.

 

Songs:       We recommend a portion of a relevant song to be sung by congregation at the end of each scene. Use the suggested song or select a personal favorite. Our aim in the selection was to use older songs and hymns as a means of re-introduction.

 

Tableau:      For each scene there is a suggested tableau where an image is created with silent and frozen actors at Upstage, highlighted by spotlight, or have the image on a wall in shadows or behind scrim. For more ideas contact DramaShare.

Narrator:     Each year Mary and Joseph, along with their children and all dutiful members of the Jewish community, would go to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of the Passover.

 

R1:         This mass exodus of all Jews from throughout Israel made the normally small town of Jerusalem swell to three or even four times it’s usual size, resulting in a temporary population of as much as 100,000.

 

R2:         And so it was that when Jesus was 12 years of age, Joseph and all his family joined with their neighbors in their annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

 

Narrator:     When the feast was over all visitors left Jerusalem to return to their homes. It wasn’t until a day later Mary and Joseph became aware that Jesus had stayed behind in Jerusalem.

 

R1:         It was not unusual that the parents did not immediately notice that their son wasn’t with them. People, for reasons of companionship and security, traveled in a group, meaning that often young people from different families or towns might travel together, as would men and also women.
